There’s little doubt that you have seen a Hino truck on the road; after all, Hino makes an assortment of commercial trucks that are used in major industries all over North America. Hino trucks come in a range of sizes and capabilities and can be used for all sorts of tasks and be customized for specific roles. Transporting goods is one area Hino trucks shine, but have you ever wondered where all the products Ontario produces are going? In this blog we give you a snapshot of where millions of dollars of goods are being transported annually.

Our Friend to the South

You likely won’t be surprised to know that a lot of Ontario’s products are shipped south of the border. In 2016 Ontario exported more than $205 million worth of goods and more than 80% of that was shipped to the US. Ontario and Canada as a whole is dependent on our southern neighbours for economic prosperity, and it’s largely commercial trucks bringing good across the border that keep our economy running. With 52 states in the US, Ontario’s goods end up in every state down south. Michigan receives the most trade from Ontario, with 8.25% of Ontario’s goods landing in the state, followed by Ohio at 6%, and New York state at 4.28%.

What are we Shipping?

Ontario’s companies produce and distribute a wide range of products. At the top of the list is automobiles which make up 30% of the goods shipped each year, and when you add automotive parts in there, that’s a total of 36% of Ontario’s exports tied to the automotive sector. Gold, medication, aircraft and helicopters parts, and breads and pastries are other notable sectors where Ontario shines and exports significant amounts of goods.

What About the Other Provinces?

Of course, Ontario companies ship goods to other provinces, but that has also been a sticking point for a long time. Depending on the product or sector, many companies have found it easier to ship products to the US rather than other provinces in Canada. Reliable inter-provincial trade stats are actually hard to find, but there is some good news: there has been progress lately on provinces coming together to remove trade barriers and encourage closer economic ties between provinces. The first step in the right direction is the recently announced Canada Free Trade Agreement.

"The new Canadian Free Trade Agreement represents an important step forward for Canada's economic union. By supporting a modern, open, and competitive Canadian economy, the agreement will help create new opportunities across the country. Businesses can look forward to new markets for their products and services, consumers will enjoy more choice and convenience and the Canadian economy will benefit from more innovation and growth."

Brad Duguid, Chair of the Internal Trade Renewal Negotiations /  Minister of Economic Development and Growth, Government of Ontario

We hope our short guide gave you an understanding of where Ontario’s good are shipped and what major changes are being put in place to help our products reach more markets across Canada. A lot of these goods are being shipped by Hino commercial trucks and that’s something we’re incredibly proud of.
