It’s a fact, the commercial trucking industry in Canada needs drivers. There is a big shortage of qualified truck drivers which means there is an opportunity for people looking to enter a new field and start an exciting career.

Are you interested in being a commercial trucker? Here are the general steps you’ll need to take.

Know Your Class

Commercial trucks come in a range of sizes and capabilities; in Ontario, you need to get a specific type of class of license depending on the commercial trucks you’re looking to drive. Most commercial truck drivers need a Class A license which allows drivers to operate tractor-trailers, double trailers, and trailers with air brakes.

Requirements

Not just anyone can get a Class A license. In Ontario, only those who meet the following criteria can obtain a Class A license.

  • be at least 18 years old

  • hold a valid Ontario licence other than G1, G2, M, M1 or M2

  • pass an eye test

  • submit a medical report

  • pass a written test about operating large trucks and tractor-trailers

  • pass a road test

Training

This is where the rubber hits the road. There are plenty of superb truck driver training schools in Ontario that will ensure you have the knowledge and skills you need to drive Class A commercial trucks. As of July 1st, 2017 everyone must take an entry-level training course before attempting to pass the road test. With so many options for schools, be sure to “shop around” and choose a school you’re comfortable with. Many schools offer both full and part-time courses.
