Commercial Trucks Are Getting Safer

Driving a commercial truck is no easy task.

Not only are you working to maneuver a vehicle that weighs thousands of pounds, but you’re also usually carrying cargo that costs thousands of dollars. Between watching the road for reckless drivers and keeping an eye on your truck body at the rest stop, the job can be tough, especially when you don’t have a second pair of eyes.

The North American trucking industry is working to change that. Many new Hino trucks, like the Hino 500 Series and Hino 300 Series are now designed with built-in cameras that aim to increase safety, accountability, and security out on the road.

Here’s how it all works:

Cameras, Radar, and Lasers, Oh My!

Back in the day, Canadian truckers were lucky if their radio even picked up a signal as they made their way north. Today, commercial trucks are evolving at a rate almost as quickly as new cars, and that means they’re loaded with new smart technology and security features.

One of the biggest fears that fleet operators have is colliding with a smaller vehicle and taking the blame for it. Quite often, it’s the smaller cars, SUVs and light-duty trucks that commercial trucks share the road with that cause the accidents due to impatience behind the wheel. Now, the trucking industry wants to add security measures to make sure this doesn’t happen.

New camera and video software systems work to collect sensory data from your truck that can successfully track important factors like driving speeds, braking patterns, and the movement of other vehicles on the road. Tracking softwares like these could eventually pinpoint bad driving habits like aggressive speeding, acceleration, or braking, ultimately training truckers to be safer and aware of their surroundings in complex environments.

Safety Comes Standard

The Hino 500 Series marks a very important shift in the Canadian trucking industry. All 90 models in the series come with a standard microphone-enabled reverse camera. Hino first achieved fame with the Hino 300 Series, which was the first light-duty truck of its kind to provide a standard reverse camera. Hino reverse cameras are waterproof, ADR-compliant, and their built-in microphones allow you to communicate with individuals outside your truck, without ever getting out. If you have to make a delivery at night, you can now complete the action from inside the safety of your cab, while accessing a 360-degree view of your surroundings.

It’s no secret that Canadian truck drivers can come into contact with all kinds of people and situations out on the road, especially in remote areas, or during the night. Hino’s commitment to designing new Hino trucks with advanced safety features is just one more way the company is standing behind its customers. The integration of cameras brings added safety and security to the driver, while mitigating the potential for accidents or cargo theft.
