A History Lesson From Hino

History written on a typewriter

From the late 1940’s through to the early 1970’s it was a common sight to see giant 18-wheelers. Known as the King of the Road, these cab-over engine trucks were prominent on highways as they rumbled along, carrying shipments near and far. But now, spotting one is a rare occurrence. Sure, you’ll see big rigs, but you won’t find too many of the original cab-over design and caliber. Cab-over engines have been around for as long as anyone can remember due to their ability to transport more than the regular work truck, and became even more popular after the Second World War as the economy boomed and production was at a high point. Transporting goods along the highway became increasingly popular and the trade economy continued to soar.

Early Beginnings

In the 1960’s and 1970’s, the length of trailers started to grow, but a majority of states in the U.S had very restrictive laws that forced manufacturers to rethink their truck designs. The only way to squeeze a larger trailer into the same length and width “box” was to shrink the cab. By doing this, operator comfort was compromised for the sake of making the most of every inch of space. For drivers making long hauls throughout the night, this didn’t go over too well. In the early 1980’s, regulatory limits on tractor lengths were thrown out, and COE’s went out of style to the verge of extinction, because their cramped driving quarters were not ideal. Wheelbase and suspension being equal, a COE with the driver sitting atop the front axle delivers an  inferior ride quality to a conventional.

For drivers of the era, back and kidney problems were a common workplace injury, caused as a result of being forced to work long hours in uncomfortable settings. Many drivers also reported slips and falls while accessing the cab. As the freight business evolved into larger carriers keeping drivers on the road for  three to four weeks or more at a time, the smaller living spaces offered became a disadvantage. While COE’s still exist, today’s strict regulations have forced them to evolve to match other automotive standards.

Modern Comfort and Luxury

Today’s 195h Hino diesel-electric hybrid represents a giant leap for the trucking industry, and for those truckers who came before us. The hybrid COE has an ergonomically-designed interior, allowing for maximum driver comfort, which is essential to safe driving. Gone are the days of back pain and a stiff neck, with plush comfortable seats that can adjust to any driver. The cabs also come fully air-conditioned, cruise control and the first of its kind Hybrid Adaptive Control System which allows for continuous communication between the Engine Control Unit to evaluate driving and road conditions for optimized fuel economy. Accessorizing your Hino is also on the rise, and gives drivers the option to personalize their cab. Whether you're after a customized paint job, adding leather seats, an impressive entertainment system, or a few exterior accessories like a sun visor or new trim, Somerville Hino has you covered.

Also new to the trucking world is Hino’s HinoWatch program, which offers drivers 24/7 protection through a roadside assistance program.
